How can I resume downloads

Post by Cyanide »

I have a problem downloading:(.
The matter is, I use a modem 56k and it's very difficult for me to download games. I've been trying to download one, it has links with "Download it here" button. When I use my browser to download, it begins ok, but after some time (about half an hour) downloading just stops and I can't do anything about it. I stop freezed downloads, look up where it was downloading from and try to use download manager with that link to be able to resume download in such cases, but the download manager refuses to retrieve those files! It says "File size is unknown, can't resume". So I set it to download file as only 1 part not dividing in 5 parts as usually, and still it won't work! It still says the same thing :(. Please, help! How can I download those files other than via brower? I need to be able to resume, bc my internet connection is very unstable, and downloading any file which is more than 1 megabyte via browser has always been a bad idea :(

Yeah it's pretty much like freakboy proclaimed, most uploads are on Yahoo briefcase/groups and they don't perform too well with 56k connections.

Basically all uploads were uploaded to free hosts which all have their pros and cons. Usually, the faster the host is, the less reliable it is in terms of longlivety, so it's a tradeoff really. Yahoo! keeps/kept files online for a long period of time, so it's a good alternative, bar for some 56k users...

Which download manager are you using? FlashGet seems good for more stable connection of slow downloads.... so maybe try that.

That wasn't from a yahoo group. In fact, when downloading from a yahoo group, download managers work. That was just a download with a button "Download it here" written on it. The button appears right at this site. I just hope someone could suggest how to set the download manager so it would work if that's possible. I guess the problem is the referrer field or something alike, as downloading only works when you 'came' to the download page from this site. When I just post a direct link to Flashget, it might think I came from 'nowhere'.

That's what I've been trying to download:

How can any of these be downloaded via download manager?:(

Come2store

Post by Liamoneal »

If that's a come2store link the problem is on their end. They don't allow download managers. You can try the resident Firefox download manager it's worked once or twice for me. I don't usually have trouble with it though because most of the files there are medium length. Not over 10 mb. The sites that allow huge files. Forget it. I simply can't get them to download either. Yes. I'm on dialup too.

Guys, not in every city of the world DSL is cheap. In mine, it's extremely expensive. I had it, so I know what I'm talking about... I had to pay not monthly, but for every 1 megabyte I downloaded (and very much at that). And there's no other DSL service in my city, yet:(. Even dial-up here costs more than 20-23 dollars. It's more like starting from 50.
Well, I'm sorry, should have read the FAQ on this site. This really seems to be come2store's problem, just like Liamoneal says.

Hi Cyanide,

maybe try a ISDN connection with bundled lines = 128kbps up/download. That has worked very well for me in the past and even internet telephonie is possible and its cheap in our days.

:( hope to be of help

Hi LiFe!
Thank you, I'll try to find out about ISDN. Not a very big chance that it's cheaper here than DSL, though. Hopefully, things will change in a few years!
Anyway, it seems that I overestimated the 'badness' of my connection. ISP still behaves strange, connection crashes sometimes, but true crashes happen rarely, mostly connection will just freeze. Besides, I found out that when I use Firefox and some download freezes, it will resume in a few minutes :). So I've downloaded that 200 mbs of a game I wanted so much, and everything is great :). Except speed, of course, but oh well.
*prays for prices to get lower soon :)*
