I have installed Windows 98 SE, Windows XP with SP2 and Fedora Core 4. There is no problems if you install Windows XP in another disk partition. Windows XP installer will ask you if you want to upgrade your Windows ME copy to Windowx XP or if you want to leave it intact and install Windows XP in another partition.
After installing Windows XP apart when you boot your machine you will be promted for a menu in which you can select if you want to start Windows XP or Windows ME. So simple.
About Linux, well, depends of which distribution you want to install.
NOTE: Be careful with NTFS partition file system while you are installing Windows XP. I think Windows ME can't read/write from NTFS partitions. There is a Windows 98/ME unofficial NTFS reader. I have it installed in my own Windows 98 SE and works great . But you can't write on NTFS file systems under Windows 98/ME.

One thing thats bugging me, When you install windows ME the computer reboots several times, which is normal.
When I install XP to a seperate partition, my D:\ partition is win XP going to reboot during instalation like ME and then boot to winME instead of compleating the instalation of XP ?
Mmm...I don't remember it well, but I haven't got never any problem installing and reinstalling Windows XP with Windows 98 also installed. If XP installer needs rebooting of course installation will continue with Windows XP, or you will be asked for selecting between ME and XP after reboot during installation and after selecting Windows XP the installation process will continue without problems.
At least as I remember. I'm not the typical Windows user that reinstall OS often.

anyway remember this you need two partitions one with fat32( for win 98 ) and one with ntfs(for win xp)
1.make those partitions
2.first install win 98(on the fat32 partition) then win xp(on the ntfs partition)
3.if you done this right then when you run your comp you will see a boot menu when you can chose you win (you can change those names in this boot menu in the boot.ini file )
and like SeriousSam said win98 cannot read ntfs partion so watch out (make a 20 gig partiton for win 98 with fat32 it will be enough for those old timers )
anyway win 98 don`t work for me anymore - new gfx on PCI - Express and old windowses don`t recognise it , anyway good that i can still install the good old DOS 6.22 under vmware and run those old games (its way better then doxbox )
