is "Ripping" going to die ?
hi,
today i asked myself if game rip`s / ripping will die........
cause of the size those games have nowadays and i mean all those broadband connections
i think it isnt such a problem anymore downloading big files in short time......even GB.........
what do you think will the future bring ? will there always be rips or will the groups just release IMAGE`s and thats it in the end ?
bye

With games growing more and more in size, and media supporting more space to store game content, I'm thinking ripping would mostly be applied to multilingual releases that would have several gigs used for localization. Ripping out non-English content leaves the game intact for the English audience, which is the majority of people.
Besides, there's a trend with game collectors to have untouched images of the original game. With broadband connections becoming more common, size hardly is an issue anymore these days, especially for the older games.
And with newer games, ripping/downscaling the quality of the game doesn't make much sense, because people want to see the game shine on their fast new hardware. Having textures/sound compress in a lossy way doesn't help much, so either way that would be a big no-no...

see :Scaryfun wrote:Problem is game companies don't want to make their size smaller as it would ease piracy... since most cd protections are broken eventually anyway.
Strangehold 2xdvd9 game all in game cutscenes are Bink movies and textures/music/sound are uncompressed
Arena 51 - 2: Blacksite another 2xdvd9 game and the same tactic all textures/music/sound are uncompressed
Kane & Lynch game on a dvd9 , when you delete the that 4 trailer in 5 languages (1.3 gig) and remove the other languages this game is 4.4 big , after compression with 7zip 4 gig
Two problems: 1. degraded performance, because of the proceduraly generated stuff 2.There is no content like storyline etc. in this game, once they add this, the game will be hundreds megs in size or few gigs.kvaki wrote:hmm maybe but maybe games will start using this format. read the description about the game.

There's also a high increase of redundancy in games, especially since most of them are ports FROM consoles, which were originally optimized with redundancy to allow better off-the-disc caching.Scaryfun wrote:Problem is game companies don't want to make their size smaller as it would ease piracy... since most cd protections are broken eventually anyway.
With PCs that redundancy is not neceassary however they still leave it messy and bloaty anyway. Just Cause is a nice example.
Also most japanese PC games do this as well, and there's not a single rip scene for those. They're all weeaboos for full uncompressed cd images no matter how redundant or blank filler it is.
I think that the ripping time is already gone. With the download speeds we can get today, it isn't necessary anymore to download just the "main game", or download the whole game in parts, such as Torrente, wich has separate downloads for movies and music and etc.
I used to get rips when I was a dial-up user, but now that I have dsl [wich isn't a great advance anyway] i get full images at once. torrent is a great source.

Yeah, that's true, and it's not just about computer games.Smiling Spectre wrote:Ha-ha-ha. In Russia ripping is prosper. Every damn pirate makes 2-in-1 games, integrating Russian language, and effectively kill/downgrade "unnecessary" parts of game. Result is sometimes very horrible... but always small.
I got a copy of Obscure for PS2 another day that is in russian and the movies look like made in a Mega Drive system with horrible sound.
And I am brazilian

now I wonder who would buy a game in russian around here >.<
