I cannot compare both cards (it both to expensive for me), but I can compare drivers. Nvidia, seems, still better supports CRT monitors (I have such, and my ATI have much more limited support), and it's drivers much better works with many old games and projects. I has old GeForce 3 up to this August - and I never experience any problem (except modern games, of course - but it is card limitation
. On the other hand, my current ATI 1600 cannot maintain good frequency on different screen resolutions, several games has problems with D3D, and even DOSBox wasn't work "good" up to last Ykwong release.
On the other hand, ATI have good and intuitive possibility to display screen on TV. Nvidia was constant headache - one version of drivers won't see TV, other see, but only when TV was turn on before computer, third "lost", when TV suddenly turned off and on... And there is also manipulations - I must find and enter the extended properties tab, select second monitor and mode of displaying, activate it, and reversive repeat all of this again if I want to return. On the ATI, from the other side, I simply set check "extend desktop on the other monitor" - and that's all! And everything simply works. Amazing.

Strange. I had any mode for DOSBox (especially full-screen ones) works strange (Surface, for example, has occasionally slowdowns, and DDraw cannot be started in fullscreen at all - but can be switched from window. Direct3D start to work at all only at latest Ykwong build). Also, in Nvidia drivers I can set any frequency for any mode - from 320x200 to 2048. In ATI drivers, at opposite, maximum allowed is only one override frequency for all modes. And I have latest ATI drivers. I do something wrong?Narfous wrote:for me, it's the opposite

Basically, ATi cards tend to be faster, but they cut many details. By the time that Doom³ came out, John Carmack appeared on a commercial saying that he would recommend ATi video cards for faster speeds. On another interview, while playing D³ with nVidia hardware, he said that the ATi card would have faster speeds, but nVidia cards would have more effects, hat when turned off by the user, would make the card even faster than the ATi one. BUT, I can't remember wich video cards exactly he was comparing...

Ati cards have been lagging behind Nvidia for some time now. The new 3870 is only OK and inferior to the equivilent 8800GT but will sell well anyway due to the huge bottleneck of 8800GT supply. The 3850 is a good card I have to say for the money. But that card alone isn't enough to pull Ati back up.
their last great series of cards was the last gen X19xx series. The flagship 2900XT was a bit of a flop. The mid range HD2x00 series was a flop too.
That said Nvidias mid range parts were crap as well (8600GT/GTS) but at least they held the performance and high end budget ranges with the 8800 series...

idk
i still didnt buyed a new card but i will now end of january or end of febuary cause the prices are much lower in that time of the year after christmas......
i think about getting an GEFORCE 8800 GT for 200-220 euro
or like i said before an ATI RADEON X1950 PRO
the X1950 PRO has in most games 30-40 % more power than an 8600 GT !
and costs 160 (i asked last year in november and the card was at 170-180 euro now i guess it must be 160 euro)
but the prob is my graphic port i mean lol i can forget about getting an NVIDIA GFORCE 8800 GT if i dont buy a new board at the same time lol
cause i just have AGP on my board and not PCI-E
so i will choose an ATI X1950 pro.....
thats the fastest still avaible AGP card on the market i think......and that wont be much much longer the case

The 7950GT AGP is the fastest agp card you can get however it is very rare.hurenBock wrote:idk

The 7900GS outperforms the x1950 in some area's but loses in others and is aparently alot more expensive.
I personally have an inno3d 8800GT 512mb PCI-E AND I F-IN LOVE IT!
How big is your screen? (aka what res are you looking to run games at?) Getting a super-powerfull card for a 17" is rather stupid since native res is about 1024x768 and you really dont need a super-crazily-powerfull card to max out that res. I personally would have gone the 256mb 8800GT but my screen is 22" Wide (1680x1050) so I got the 512mb.. That and I saved an extra $100 from working

It might turn out better for you to just fully upgrade I've built whole systems (just case no screen keyb etc) for $350AUD that is probably more powerfull then what you have (intel core 2 duo 1.86ghz, 2gig ddr2, 250gig hdd, dvd-burner, 7300GT PCI-E nice case good mobo)

i have a 19 zoll screen (i dont know how its called in english zoll = inch maybe ? )
and i always 1024 resolution......well if my pc is powerfull enough for the game i want to run in that resolution of course
but desktop etc always 1024
and even if i can i dont get higher cause i think its senseless everything above 1024 isnt really seeable.......many people say that this isnt true but i dont care........
it just needs performance and you cant really see a big diffrence if you run something in 1024 or 1600 or even 2048 (ok lol havnt seen much games in 2048 res since now)
