Anybody here know the Tech side of Broadband?
Let me give you a little background this connection, I'm on is my mothers, she's on AtlanticBroadband in Maryland. Supposedly it's a 100 Mbps cable connection, at least that's what it says. The actual speeds I'm getting is 20kbs down/ 20kbs up. Shouldn't I be seeing more like 100kbs up/down? I've run several tweak programs, but haven't seen any real improvement. I think maybe she's being screwed, like there's a limiter on her line or something. Either that or her service just really, really sux.

100 Mbps is just a standart line bandwith. The highest possible download speed is about 2 MBs. But it costs too much and you can't use such line at home, as far as I know. Only corporations use such service.
For ex, in Russia the highest speed is 1 MBs (8 Mbps line). But you can get it only in cities like Moscow or SPB. I mean, an unlimited traffic.
In my town you can get such speed but it will cost you 40$ for 1 GB. Noone can afford it.

Well, I'm currently using 4 Mbit line, and there's no problem to switch on a true 100 Mbit, people claimed downloading from my site at 20 Mb/sec.otiscrusher wrote:100 Mbps is just a standart line bandwith. Ah, it's stream... Only in Moscow avaible yet. But Moscow is just one of many cities in Russia. I don't care about Moscow, I care only about my small town. I'm not gonna live in Moscow only because of fast speed.Well, I'm currently using 4 Mbit line, and there's no problem to switch on a true 100 Mbit, people claimed downloading from my site at 20 Mb/sec.

See, the problem is I'm spoiled. Back home, which is in the suburbs near a big city (Philadephia), the service was really good. I was getting download speeds of 400+ kbps on average. Now I'm in a rural town, and getting 20 kps tops. It's like having to get places on a horse, after expriencing what it's like driving a Porsche.

Cable modem
I live in a large town in East Texas and my download speeds vary between 8 and 600 kbps depending on what software I'm using. Check out your cable modem. It could be defective or you might be getting screwed. By the way the average download speed I get is around 300 kbps.
