Rat Hunter - Starforce?

Post by Kessler »

I was able to install Rat Hunter with Daemon Tools, but it still has the Starforce software included, which demanded switching CDs, but switching them in the virtual drive didn´t help. Before I waste 2 CDs on it, can somebody confirm that this will work when I burn the images on CD?

Also, if somebody speaks Russian: it would be very helpful to have the basic menues translated into English (just the very basic things, like what is the options menue called, where you can find start new game, quit game and save/load game) :)

Based on what is written here I would say NO!

What you need is a fixed .exe file like a NoCD patch.

I installed a StarForce protected game on a computer for someone recently and the thing I noticed is that installing the game doesn't install the StarForce drivers, running the game does.

If you want to keep StarForce off your system install the game and replace the game.exe file with a fixed one before you run the game for the first time.

Yes, I noticed Starforce first showed up after I installed the game. OK, so I will have to look for a replacement exe.

That are the reasons why I want to have a NOCD-patch instead of an emulator!

Rat Hunter does not work from a burned disc. Is does work with an image and Deamon Tools though. It's not terrible. It's a classic 3D type shooter, the levels are linaer, you kill monsters/bad guys, pick up weapons and ammo, and make your way to the end of the level where you get a tally of % of monsters kill, etc. The bad guys remind me of Gore, the levels are mostly futuristic corridors or streets, or industrial type spaces. Haven't found a No-CD for it though.

English controls

Post by Trey »

If you look in the install directory under 'Data' you'll see a folder called 'localization', inside that is a folder called 'Eng'! Before you go getting all excited the translation was appearantly never completed, there's just a 'localization.xml' and a texture folder containing 3 textures - help.DDS, tt-1.DDS, and tt-5.DDS. I can't figure out where these textures are supposed to go.

Copy the 'localization.xml' from the 'Eng' folder, copy that over the exsisting 'localization.xml' in the data folder. This will give you english names for keys in the options menu.

Main Menu option 1 is: New Game
Main Menu option 2 is: Load Saved Game
Main Menu option 3 is: Options Menu (including the keys)
Main Menu option 4 is: Exit

How can I get this working? I mounted the image with Daemon Tools and installed the game, but then I had the problems with Starforce. Or do you mean a different image?

Nope, I'm just using the downloaded image and Daemon Tools Lite (4.12.3) with all the Emulation Options on.

Still doesn´t work :(
I have Daemon Tools Lite 4.30.03, emulation options (RMPS, safedisc, securom, laserlock) all enabled, but Starforce still rejects the image. Is there some other setting I should try? I don´t have much experience with this...

It'll never work without SFNightmare (or unplugging the cables). Use it before launching your game.
And don't try burning the image. Your chances are so tiny that I wouldn't even think about that. Even with a very expensive Plextor it's most likely you won't succeed. Create a mini image if you don't want to store the whole CD.

This is weird, then why is it working on my machine? I definatly don't have SFNightmare installed.

I've got plain old Daemon Tools Lite 4.12.3

All emulation options are ON
Under 'Options', 'Secure Mode' and 'Check For Updates' are checked.
Number of devices: 2
Device parameters: Vendor-HJ9056N, Model-NJO029C, Revision-1.01, Drive letter-G, Region-NA

Whether or not this game will run with Daemon Tools depends on your hardware. Some revisions of star-force 4.x (2006-2007) had a problem with some newer motherboards whereas the protection driver couldn’t communicate properly with the hardware, resulting in ‘X’ SF game being able to verify the disc from a virtual image and hook the driver to launch the game. I have a fairly new Nvidia chipset based motherboard, and I have played certain SF games only using DT Lite.

Discussing to-and-pros of DaemonTools and its difficulties, isn't there any NOCD-crack of this game in the WholeWideWeb?

Nope. It was onlyreleased in Russia and the surrounding region, so it was never cracked.
