3DRealms - RIP
Oddly, the fate of the aptly titled 'Duke Nukem Forever' is still up in the air because the rights are held by a seperate company...

I read about this recently too.
I was wondering when they would finally go under. How many times could they get away with re releasing Duke 3D
I really hope the rights to the DNF game code get bought by some developer who would be interested in polishing it off and finally releasing it. 3D Realms were never going to do it, so I think this is the only way forward for the game

After so many years and so many games in the FPS genre, I don't expect any new inventions to this game.
I have played Wolfenstein, Duke-Nukem-3D (of course), Quake1234, Unreal???, HalfLife12xy, Chronicles-of-Riddick (one of the best games ever made) ... and so many other good games!
How do they want to surpass these?
I think that's the real reason why they can't cash the high expectations.

Whether or not it is ground-breaking FPS, fans would still enjoy seeing the character and experience the humor - something which is usually lacking in games like this.
