Broken 1.4GB Rar ?

Post by neo_viral »

Hey all :)

A more rar help than game help question, dunno if im posting this in the right section but here goes....

I downloaded a 1.4GB Rar file .It was that,or downloading 7 plus split files and the site it had been hosted on (the split files) was having way too much traffic. So the file downloaded and everything, according to the uploader is the complete file,no password,etc...and being 1.4GB it looks the right size...

However when i open the rar it says Size 1.4 GB or such, packed 49.000(like 50MB) ? When i try to extract it keeps asking me for a previous volume even though the file is named .rar.Like "you have to start extraction from an earlier volume".I tried 7Zip as well wich asks no questions...but only extracts 50 MB then stops.

Is there any way i can extract this file or is it broken ? In wich case, torrent it is with one seed *sigh*.Im thinking there might be a problem because of the packed ratio (50mb) yet it reads on my hdd as 1.4GB wich is the proper size......

Hoping theres some secret trick to letting me salvage this file ;/

DId it seem to take the right amount of time to download? or did it end early? Do you have the most recent version of WinRAR? Sometimes you can stranges errors if it was made with a newer version than the one you're trying to Unrar with.

Yeah it took about +- 13 hours to download,i left it o/night and such, file showed complete and unbroken on transfers on Opera....thats about normal time for a file that size for me.....

Thanks for the tip, gonna go try and see if a new version of Rar will do the trick! :)

Opera corrupts big downloads often.

Had a similar problem after downloading a certain game about busting ghosts. 65 parts on RS/MU/MF, turns out the original upload was corrupt, so after downloading the same 7 bad parts from all three servers, I looked into trying different RAR repair utilities. Long story short, none of them work on multi volume archives.

See if you find a SFV-file!
It contains checksums of all corresponding files.
Downloaded files from TORRENT-sites are often fakes or broken.
If you have downloaded many RAR-files, check them with the RAR-commandline version:
RAR32 -vt <filename>
If there is a sign like "RR", then a recovery record is available and you can recover a wrong file with "RAR -r <wrong_filename>".
But first look if you have all RAR-files downloaded.

What exactly are you trying to download? Maybe someone can find a replacement.

The wing-nut that did the upload was re-uploading the Reloaded version, he just didn't check it first, or use a recovery record or anything. So he ended up wasting my time, and his own time. It's not like I can complain or anything, I just found his upload, he wasn't doing it for me specifically.

Downloaded new version of Winrar...still no go.Its not a disaster even though it sucked half my monthly bandwidth allowance because i want to buy the DVD when it comes out later this year,i have my stub, just wanted to watch it again because its off circuit here atm ;/

File seems to be named when i go into info

Archive Name.description.date.rar

SFX Rar volume (Number 2) (This might be why it keeps asking for earlier archive..wonder if i can change that...)

File doesnt tell me its broken by saying sudden end to archive but then again im not used to downloading such files in one go.

Also Ratio says 3%.....wich is whats making me believe the file is broken somehow because it also says...

Total Files : 1
Total size : 1,454,461,840
And then
Packed size : 49,999,906 (?!)

Could well be Opera indeed...sometimes when i transfer stuff it says complete, but when i open the browser again the next day it will say transfer was broken even though i can still open the file and such....

Thanks for the hints guys ,but i guess this one is a no go,time to wait for DVD,only a few months :)

From experience I'd say archive 2 is broken. If it was the first, it would not show any size. If it was the third, it would tell you packed size is 100 MB (if 50MB rars) and so on.

If one archive is "missing" to unpack one or more files, WinRAR GUI's explorer will show like "filename ---->" like it does "filename*" on password protected ones.

Open WinRAR, select the file and click on "Extract To". Then select "Keep broken files". Maybe now it will unpack the whole archive. If it is a scene release, run the SFV file and check which files are broken. You only have to re-download the files which are broken.

Still depends on if you find them somewhere NOT repacked. :D

That shouldn´t be a problem nowadays, especially with popular stuff. But it´s true that there are many repacks floating around.

Plus, keep in mind that when dealing with original release group files, most of the time they're posted on UseNet too. In that case, usually they have accompanying par files that can help you recover gaps in the files you do have, or sometimes can even regenerate a complete file from scratch.

I heared you could rebuild as many complete files as you have those par files. Never got such files in my hands so I don't know if it's true.
