Counter Strike: Source

Post by Sid »

Ive downloaded one of the mods for Counter Strike: Source, CSS SCI FI 3.exe. and kind of got stuck at part one of the install as the source I posted on the site doesn't have a steam install and so no Source Mods Dir..

Has anyone actually managed to get this mod up and running without the original game? a workaround or something..

cheers

Sid

Installation

This archive contains the file CSS SCI FI 3.exe.

1.Ensures that Steam and CS:S are installed.
2.Locates the user's SourceMods directory, creates a new directory for CSS SCI FI, and installs the mod resources within it.

I am not sure how the Source engine works (haven't played any games that are based on it).

But if the installer is one file you could try unpacking the installer using a neat tool called Universal Extractor (can be found at www.legroom.net along with other handy stuff).

If the installer is unpackable and the filenames can be generated you can then manually create the SourceMods directory, put the mod in it and hope for the best.

P.S.: That is one ironing fanatic.

To play Source mods, they only item you need in your Steam list is the "Source SDK Base".
This provides base files that all Source games and mods share.
You get this when you have bought any one Source game eg: Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 2, or Day of Defeat: Source.
Some mods also use files from those games, and some don't.

Since you have CS:S standalone, you either don't have the extra package, or it's been extracted and included.
So the file structure is probably different, if you can run it at all I'd guess you do so with commandline options, but I tried a quick bit of googling and didn't find anything very helpful.

You can get a cheap Orange Box or Multiplayer Pack key from G2Play, I did. Cheaper than buying it on Steam, especially the Orange Box key.
Either would allow you to play Source mods, although you'd probably need the Multiplayer Pack since that has CS:S if you want to play mods that use it's files.

@I_AM

thanks for the heads up, I'm curious how does one buy just the Multiplayer Pack key on steam, I have a full version of the game off the net on DVD and don't want to download it from steam it would take too long so just the key would be great, I ask because I want to compare prices, I looked about and cant find a buy key option.. or do you have to install the game and then get a buy link off steam..

cheers

I'm not sure about the Multiplayer Pack, but with Orange Box I know that G2Play are selling retail keys. They're not really supposed to and Valve don't especially like it.
You get the key via email, and then you enter the key into Steam and it unlocks the Orange Box games, same as if you entered your own retail purchased key. Then you can download them through Steam.
