I own a copy of the Orange Box on steam. However, a few months ago, Valve released an automatic steampipe update which broke a ton of mods. Does any have an old standalone version of HL2 EP1 and EP2 that can run mods? Thanks much!

Thats why I dont like steam and be dependend on additional software platform layer.

You could try the version of The Orange Box that's available on the site. That one works without Steam.

Well, I did try the Godmode standalone from the Russian site, However, I cannot figure out how to run mods with it. (I am only interested in single player mods), There is just an exe file which launches HL2. So if somebody can teach me how to run mods with the Godmode standalone or other standalones, it would be great. Thanks!

I just tested the orange box dvd from this site, it does run some old mods that the current version cannot (ie Siren), so if other people wants to play old mods, they can use that one.

Yes, unfortunately, Steam broke a lot of the old mods. Although some have re-released compatible versions, check out this site for some - http://www.planetphillip.com/

Sidenote:
I have these files stored:
They have vpk files(i presume that's the new format)
hl2.13.11.09.7z (1.52 GB)
hl2.ep1.13.11.09.7z (817 MB)
hl2.ep2.13.11.09.7z (1.52 GB)
I got them from rin a while a go.(google: hl2.13.11.09.7z )
You'll prob. need to be logged in to see it.

I haven't played the hl2 games for ages ,but i seem to remember u could extract the contents of vpk files and the game
will read the extracted game files before the vpk files.
so maybe u can put your mods in the extracted folders.
I'm pretty sure i did this for a hl2 nude mod
It was getting the mods into the correct folders that caused a few probs. until i figured it out.
