Kreed Battle for Savitar--200 FPS Problem...

Post by wkduffy »

Hi all! Trying to play "Kreed: Battle for Savitar" (2004) and I am getting 200 frames per second, even on my lowly dual core laptop. Great for someone with ADD, but unplayable for a tortoise like me.

I've tried (no joy):
Changing affinity to one core (with both Core Affinity Resident and more permanently using ImageCFG)
CPU Killer
FPS Limiter (program)
Refresh Rate Lock (program)
Forcing v-sync (in several ways--in the config file, in the nVidia control panel, and also using D3D Overrider)
Changing "maxFPS" settng in config file (seems to have no effect and is set at 0 in default anyway)

I did install this on both Win7 and XP operating systems on a dual-boot machine with the same results in either environment. My only luck was with FPS Limiter, which slows the FPS down to 30 (via the counter) for about 15 seconds, but then it ramps right back up again, like it's not sticking? Interestingly, when it slips back into turbo mode, the game's FPS counter goes in the opposite direction, showing only 3 or 4 FPS, but it is clearly running at 50x that. What the...?

I've heard that this kind of "bug" can be built into games as anti-piracy measures? Considering the age of the game and its eastern Euro origins, I am playing a downloaded version, the link from here. Can maybe someone up another version?

Any thoughts, or other programs to try? I rarely get stumped on these kinds of things...

May have found an accidental workaround and thought I'd post it since I've not seen this suggestion elsewhere. This might also work for other games with the speed-up problem? I found that running TWO instances of the game seems to have the desired effect of slowing things down. So, I click on the desktop icon once, and the game instance is running very quickly as usual. Then minimizing it (but allowing it to run) I click on the desktop icon again, and a second instance of the game runs ("Kreed Battle for Savitar" allows multiple processes to run apparently). The second instance of the game seems to run at normal speed (though the in-game fps counter is inaccurate).

Try this 1-core-only-patched EXE, it works fine on my AMD-635 4-core:

I hate to be a necroposter, but the Fileserve link appears to cease to exist.
Can you upload on 4Shared?

I'm not sure if it's in "Maintenance" or It's File Not Found.
