The first real time 3D first-person adventure

Post by mxjgr »

The main page claims that the adventure game Nightfall would be the first real time 3D first-person adventure and the page for that game repeats this error, because this is definitly not true!
The first game in this regard was actually "Under A Killing Moon" from Access Software:

This was a game which was groundbreaking in several other aspects as well, e.g. it should be also one of the first adventure games with FMV scenes and real actors.

I found that info on the official site, but I guess they're mistaken then. I'll remove that.

Hmm interesting, I seem to recall some 3D-ish part of the game Heart of China, in which you got to drive a tank.

By no means the perspective of the whole game, just a tiny fragment of it. Predates UAKM though (2001), but the graphics aren't that 'realistic' anyway. ;)

There you go. It's all a matter of definitions, and "real time 3D first-person adventure" generally still is too broad to be deterministic. ;)

Defining "real time" and "3D" would go a long way. :P

Yes, it is a nice 3D game, but it is not an adventure, more of a puzzle/action game.
Here is a nice modern remake:

@InsaneFury: Yes, some people - especially the ones who mainly play shooters or action game - use the term "Adventure" very broadly (e.g. for 3D-Jump&Run games like Tomb Raider) - but the adventure community has general definitions for this genre, and "Total Eclipse" doesn't really fit it.

Anyway, even so "Total Eclipse" wouldn't be the first of it's kind. I still remember Mercenary from 1985 (and there were probably others before):

But still the first real adventure game with 3D graphics from a First Person Perspective, that I know, would be "Under a Killing Moon".
