Alone In The Dark Infogrames / I-Motion, Interplay Productions 1992

This groundbreaking game was the original 3d action adventure and influenced all survival horror games to come. You are detective Edward Carnby, hired to inventory the antiques in a spooky mansion whose owner died suspiciously. You can also play the mansion owner's niece, Emily through part of the game. The story was inspired by legendary horror writer H.P, Lovecraft's work. By using a revolutionary polygon based graphic engine, simplistic two-dimensional colored polygons, rather than being texture mapped, render three-dimensional characters and objects in real time. The game unfolds through the artistic use of multiple camera angles to create dramatic cinematic shots that play like you are playing a part in a movie. The puzzles are mostly inventory based or environmentally rooted. The arcade sequences take place in the form of both armed and unarmed combat. Objects are available for use as weapons. Life points are used to keep track of the health in both you and the enemies. Though there are inherent problems with the static angles in being able to control your character and items in a 3d environment, the game's spooky atmosphere and revolutionary gameplay still hold up as the classic game that it is.
