The original Playstation game that sparked the popularity of the series
was an amazing achievement gameplay wise. It breathed new air into
the survival horror genre started by the Alone In The Dark games and
sold millions of copies in its first few months. It was ported to
the PC a year and a half later. Set in a secret mansion laboratory,
the tense feeling of the game was heightened by the mansions claustrophobically
tight and narrow corridors which left little margin of error when
attempting to evade zombies. The limited ammount of ammo in the game
meant that you often avoided encounters with zombies and rationed
your ammo carefully saving it for the larger creatures and the ink
ribbons which were used to save the game on typwriters were in short
supply and you had to be careful how often you saved. The unpredictability
of what was going to happen next and the fear of being able to hear
the heavy footsteps and breathing of mutant hunters just around the
corner, not knowing when it would jump out added to the game's charm.
Also graphically speaking the game was dazzling with lavish pre-rendered
backdrops that added a certain touch of realism to the house. The
large bosses such as the snake, giant plant and the Tyrant were graphical
masterpieces and the lesser creatures such as the giant spiders, dogs,
zombies and hunters were highly detailed and stunning. A movie was
made years later out of this game which was not bad but could not
capture the feeling that the game gives in encountering things on
your own obviously, which makes the game much scarier. See also: #Resident Evil HD |
