Escape from Utopia (cancelled) Happy Humble Hermit 2020

This is a roguelike first person shooter that combines the meaningful dialogue choices and NPC encounters from single player story-based games with the replayability and unpredictability of roguelike games. It strives to combine narrative elements with randomization and perma-death to create a unique experience that remains engaging for fans of both genres. Players will experience the fast and frantic gameplay of old-school shooters like Doom and Quake, while having opportunities to build their characters and interact with the world in narrative-based games like Deus Ex and Borderlands. You have narrowly escaped the collapse of your last Utopia and have been reassigned to a new Utopia that is on the brink of destruction. Using your wits, your skills, and a little bit of luck, you must escape your new Utopia at any cost. Players will talk to NPCs, find text and audio logs, and unravel the conspiracy of the artificially engineered Mouse Utopias based on real research and experimentation. Players start with an inventory of 2, and must balance that with the weapons, items, and equipment that they find throughout the game. Every level's exit must be unlocked with a keycard found in a random location in each level, which takes up an inventory slot. Inventory can be expanded by finding bags in-game or by buying upgrades at the shop, located in each level. Every 3 to 5 levels, the player will face off against a boss, which gives powerful loot and 1 ability power, which ranges from sprinting or dashing to stopping bullets and slowing down time. Interaction with NPCs extends far beyond dialogue. Each friendly NPC found in the game can be rescued and returned to the player's base, their own Utopia. Here, the player can decide between buying upgrades during gameplay or saving the money they collect and buying upgrades for their Utopia at the shop. Every NPC rescued has certain attributes and a chance to grant a buff, modifier, weapon, upgrade, or item to the player before their next run. Features: An advanced level generation engine that can create diverse levels filled with enemies and unique enemy formations and combinations depending on the amount of floors cleared, scaleable loot and weapon placements, and NPC and Quest Giver placement; Local and Online co-op for up to 4 players with scaleable difficulty and loot depending on number of players; A persistent base that the player builds over the course of their runs to give slight advantages, enhancements, and modifiers before their next run; Fluid hand-drawn animations for each character; Varied soundtrack inspired by music from Deus Ex, Doom, and 80s synth music. Although the game was successfully funded on Kickstarter, there have been no updates since June/2020 and game development is presumed stopped.
