This was entry for the www.RetroRemakes.org Competition 2003. The original game was released by Codemasters in 1987 and was Programmed by Stephen Curtis. Mining Engineers working on the planet Krion have inadvertently triggered its destruction, and must escape in this vertically-scrolling shoot 'em up. There are over 100 screens to fly through, and they include many barriers and narrow paths, as well as force fields. There are also time-shift fields - some move you forward, but some send you back to the start. Enemies are in short supply - the game's feel resembles Artificial Dreams (from the same designer). You have limited fuel and must collect fuel tokens to recharge this. Other available powerups include points bonuses, extra lives, changes to the constant speed of scrolling, and invincibility from force fields (although not enemies). We chose to remake this game as we fondly remembered it as one of those games that you "had to try again". Some tight maneuvering and quick reactions are needed in this game and once completed you are rewarded with a fitting end sequence. At the time neither of us could finish the game so we took it upon ourselves to "tweak" the gameplay and GFX. Needless to say once we started the project the traditional plan view was quickly replaced with the 3D viewpoint instead. You play the role of the escaping Mining Engineers, escaping in his small scout ship. You have to make your way over 100 screens of tortuous terrain to the mothership waiting at the end. Fly over the terrain passing over "tiles" that active to add extra fuel - speed you up - slow you down. Avoid the "time slips" that return you right back to screen 1. The game is based on the C64 and Amstrad CPC versions. |
