Defiance Trion World Network / Namco Bandai 2013

Defiance is the first-ever open-world shooter MMO. It combines the intense moment-to-moment action of a shooter with the persistence and large-scale campaign play of an MMO. In a first-of-its-kind partnership, Trion and Syfy are collaborating on a massive event that will launch Defiance simultaneously as a global television program on Syfy and an MMO from Trion. In an entertainment first, the game and show will influence and depend on each other, and even feature some players’ characters on the TV shows as extras. The game is set in a near future version of San Francisco while the show is in St. Louis, and in both cities humanity needs to fight off the monstrous effects of alien terraforming. There'll be frequent cross-referencing between the show and the game world. Characters from the show may visit San Francisco after an episode airs. A few days later they'll show up in Defiance the game, and then when the next episode airs the character will return and report on his adventures. Going the other way, players of note in the game world (for instance, someone at the top of the PvP ladder) may be directly referenced in an episode. There are no loading times between zones, and in addition to all the third-person sci-fi shooting you'll be able to visit towns, quest and take on special challenges. This includes random world events that you can choose to bypass or partake in. Elements of the alien threat orbiting the planet will periodically slam into the ground. The pseudo-terraformed surface will try to claim the element, as will other monsters roaming the San Francisco area. When the elements drop players will be notified as well, so many will have the opportunity to move in and wipe out all the enemies to claim the element as their own. In June/2014, the game was made Free-To-Play. The game will shut down on April 29, 2021.
