This series carried on from 2 previous games named Catacomb and
Catacomb 2 which were also developed by John Carmack and published
by SoftDisk but whose gameplay was viewed from overhead. Catacomb 3D: A New Dimension [91]: You are a magician who has to kill the evil "Nemesis". In cemeteries, dungeons and catacombs you fight against orcs, skeletons, wizards, and later demons. There is just one weapon. This was the first game to use textured 3D graphics before the bigger success of Wolfenstein 3D, but still was in EGA (16 colours). The game introduced the concept of showing the player's hand. In general the ambiance doesn't manage to please a lot. Many secret passages and mostly similar textures complicate the orientation, the enemies don't look very good and are sparely animated. Catacomb 3D: The Descent [91]: Re-release of the original, nothing changed except of the title screen and boss's name. |
