Motorized carnage inspired by the 1975 cult classic movie Death Race 2000. Ever wanted to hit pedestrians during a race? Now's your chance. Carmageddon is an ultra-violent racing game which caused much controversy during the '90s but was also very popular due to its fun factor. It was also one of the first batch of games to make use of 3D accelerated graphics (using OpenGL and 3dfx Voodoo cards). Pit your wits and wheels against 25 other demented maniacs over 36 racing circuits in 5 totally different environments, in your quest to become King of Carnage and Prince of the Pile-up! Pedestrians equal points in Carmageddon, which is more than just your average driving game. Not even farmyard animals are safe as you slam on your hand brake and spin into a cow-mincing frenzy. Destroy other contestants' vehicles on the track and win credits, depending on the extent of the damage inflicted. Exchange your credits for automatic damage repair, or for better and more deadly features. Alternatively, you can "hard shoulder" your opponent, leave your twisted smoldering wreck at the curb, and steal the other driver's vehicle--now that's part exchange with a difference! The game was only given a release in the UK after a palette change, converting the humans into 'zombies' with green blood (There were also 'zombie' cows, etc). Later, a patch was released, restoring the original palette. The game was notable for its realistic and ground-breaking physics and for its in-game movie making features. It was also one of the earliest examples of sandbox 3D driving games, and may have influenced other later games including Driver and the Grand Theft Auto series.
