This is the eagerly anticipated game from id
Software, the makers of the all-time classics Doom and Quake. The glimpses
fans saw of it beforehand showed it to be using cutting-edge graphics
and an alpha was leaked on the net beforehand. Doom 3 is essentially a
remake of the original Doom so rather than an immersive gameplay experience
it still retains a simplistic shoot enemies as they pop out at you pattern.
There are reimagined versions of almost every monster from both Doom and
Doom II. You play a 22nd-century space marine called by the Union Aerospace
Corporation to its Mars research facility that is having mysterious problems.
You'll end up single-handedly fighting back legions of hellspawn using
weapons like shotguns, machine guns, and rocket launchers. Most levels
though are linear and there's not a really exciting or new storyline to
amaze you other than the nice atmosphere and super graphics. You'll frequently
find voice recordings and e-mail from various characters in order to get
passcodes for locked doors and storage chests. Some things are annoying
like you can't carry a flashlight and gun at the same time and due to
the highly detailed graphics you'll rarely face more than a few foes at
a time, and as you kill them their bodies instantly disintegrate into
ash. Already users are making mods to alter these gameplay aspects. However,
what is great about the game is unrelenting darkness and the disturbing
and nicely animated monsters. The physics and graphics engine is very
well done. As for multiplayer, the game supports only up to four players
on a handful of maps and in a small number of different deathmatch-style
modes.
