Heretic was one of the best Doom-clones in its
day (it was made with the same engine). The game takes place in a fantasy
setting which of course allows for some magic. The player, the Heretic, is
one of the last survivors of the Apocalypse. He has to battle a lot of
legendary creatures. New ideas were the ability to look up and down, the
ability to go under water and the use of items which allowed for example flight.
The game used randomized ambient sounds and noises, such as evil laughter,
chains rattling and water dripping in addition to the background music to
further enhance the atmosphere. The levels and monsters are fun and the
occasional puzzle doesn't bother too much. If you like a fantasy setting
rather than science fiction you will like this game even more than Doom.
Special credit goes to the level-bosses like the giant bull.
